Waconia housing: lake, old town and the growth ring
Waconia has had a post office since 1860 and a resort on Coney Island from the 1880s, and the old downtown near the National Register City Hall still has the early wood-sided houses, some stucco, with plaster and painted trim inside. Then the lake ring: homes along Lake Waconia from the 1950s onward, with cedar and hardboard on the older ones and fiber cement on the rebuilds. Then the growth ring, which is most of the city now. The Interlaken development on the southeast side, with Interlaken West, Interlaken Woods and its later additions, is 2000s through 2020s. Legacy Village, Woodland Creek off Hwy 284 and the Shores of Lake Waconia off Laketown Parkway are among the newest. Those homes are vinyl, LP SmartSide and fiber cement, white trim, open plans and builder flat on the walls. Waconia Public Schools (ISD 110) covers the city.
Lake Waconia weather
Lake Waconia is one of the bigger lakes in the metro, and homes on it get open-water exposure: reflected sun, steady wind, and spray on the water side, where dark trim and stained decks dry out and fade fastest. Lake Waconia Regional Park on the south shore, along Hwy 5, has the same open feel. The road side of a lake house is often shaded and slow to dry. Ice on the lake keeps the shoreline cold well into spring, so we start lake homes on the road side in May and take the water side from June on. The subdivisions on the south and east sides are open former farmland, sunny and windy, where wind-driven rain finds caulk joints. Exterior season runs roughly May through mid-October across the city.

We paint across the city: the lake homes along the south and east shores, downtown near City Hall and the Carver County Historical Society museum, the Interlaken neighborhoods on the southeast side, Legacy Village, Woodland Creek and the Shores of Lake Waconia, and the acreage between town and the surrounding townships. Hwy 5, Hwy 284 and County Road 10 are the routes into town. From our shop it is about 30 minutes: County Road 92 south to Hwy 7 at St. Bonifacius, then on to Waconia. That is a full-day drive for us, so we schedule Waconia in blocks, bring everything the first trip, and run interiors through the winter in consecutive days.

Waconia interiors are mostly newer: first repaints in the Interlaken and south-side subdivisions, an accent wall, trim to a harder enamel, sprayed kitchen cabinets in the 2000s homes that have oak or maple. Do you paint lake homes on Lake Waconia?
Yes. Lake Waconia homes get the same two-sided treatment we use on Lake Minnetonka: the water side is sun, wind and faded trim, the road side is shade and moisture. We scope and prep each side on its own and save the shoreline side for the driest, calmest weeks, usually June onward once the lake has warmed up.
Our Interlaken house still has the builder's paint. What is the first thing to do?
Inside, switch the walls from builder flat to a washable finish and the trim to a harder enamel; that is the change you feel every day. Outside, LP and vinyl from the 2000s usually need a wash, fresh caulk at windows and trim, and a color refresh rather than a scrape-and-prime job. We can look at both in one visit.
Is Waconia too far for you to take a small job?
No, but we schedule it differently. Waconia is about 30 minutes from our shop, so we plan the day around the drive and prefer to group small jobs in the same week. A single accent wall is fine if we can pair it with something else nearby; a whole-house interior stands on its own and books like any other job.
Can you paint the older houses near downtown Waconia?
Yes. The early houses near City Hall and the museum have wood siding, some stucco, and plaster inside. They need more prep than the subdivisions: scraping to a sound edge, patching, priming bare wood, and care with older paint that may contain lead. We put the prep hours in the written estimate so the price is honest.
